The Garvey House and Guest House are furnished in the comfortable mismatch of styles of the early 1900s. Our growing collection of period antiques are features throughout both residences. However, don't feel as if you can't touch anything: we're a family bed-and-breakfast, and we expect a little wear and tear when children and outdoor recreation are concerned.

All rooms include private bathrooms with claw-footed shower-tubs. Each is decorated in the comfortable, rural style common among better homes in the region in the early 1900s. All include large windows to admit the invigorating mountain air.

The Garvey House was built in 1917 for the family of the superintendent of the Maryland New River Coal Co. Its guest house was built about the same time. Both were designed to make full use of the environment. Cellars were built into the hillsides behind both homes, convenient to their kitchens. Large porches were particularly enjoyable on cool summer nights.

Walls and walks of native stone meander through the shady hillside gardens behind the Garvey House, planted about 1918 under the direction of Mrs. Garvey. The gardens feature a gazebo, two small goldfish ponds, and grotto-like terraces shadowed by hemlock. Native plants, including ferns, mosses and rhododendron, are features throughout.
